Open Day: Foxton Printery

Photo of a yellow building flanked by two brick buildings. The building has white trim around two windows either side of a green door. Prominent pediments over the door and windows. Manawatu Herald 1878 with flax painted on the cornice. Main St. No. 6 above the door.

The main section of the Manawatū Herald office was constructed in 1879 and it is the oldest surviving commercial building on Main Street. George Warren Russell and his brother and John Ruffell Russell founded the Manawatū Herald which was produced at the printery until 1964. Now, 145 years later the print shop is still used for some letterpress printing and much of the early equipment is still on site, and in use!
