Morrie the Mouse was a phenomenon of the 1970s and 1980s whose persona went beyond the confines of a few squeaks in a radio studio to become a human-sized figure appearing at all kinds of public events across the Manawatū. Thousands turned out for his ‘wedding’ in The Square at Easter 1980.
Margaret Tennant will explore what Morrie’s rise and fall tells us about Palmerston North at the time, about the history of childhood, and about the role of radio in the community over the late twentieth-century.
