When was the last time you handwrote and posted a letter? Or have you ever? We invite you to write a letter to a former or future Palmerstonian.
Local History Month begins on World Letter Writing Day, 1 September. It has been 120 years since the Charlesworth-designed, magnificent Post Office opened on the corner of Main Street and The Square. The first letter was posted by Mayor of Palmerston North, Maurice Cohen on 5 February 1906, in which he thanked the Postmaster General for erecting a handsome building for ‘the convenience of the general public in the transactions of their business’.
A letter writing station will be roving Central Library during September. As we anticipate the reopening of the former post office as a hotel later this year, we invite you to write a letter to the Palmerstonians of 1906. Or if you prefer, to Palmerstonians of the future, sealed until 2030. Join us on 1 September to write your first letter, and again at the end of the month to read the letters sent to 1906.
