LHM: Belonging and not Belonging – growing up in a mixed culture family in Palmerston North in the 50s and 60s [PRESENTATION]

Presented by Tania Kopytko

Until the 1980s New Zealand had an assimilation policy which affected the refugees who had immigrated after WW2, from Eastern, Central and Southern Europe. Tania Kopytko was born in Palmerston North, into a mixed culture family (Belarusian/NZ). What was it like for a young child to grow up in Palmerston North at that time? We will explore the town at that time, with some different perspectives thrown in. Why would Watson Bros a delicatessen on the Square, play a role?
