Forest & Bird Presents: Where the wild things are - Monitoring of cryptic species in the Manawatū

Many of our threatened species are cryptic and hard to monitor. However, without good information about species distribution, managing threatened species is difficult. In the Manawatū, anecdotal observations have suggested the region may be an important area for pekapeka/Long-tailed bats and Matuku-hūrepo/Australasian Bittern. As part of the Horizons Priority Habitat Programme, Senior Biodiversity Advisor Dr Zoë Stone has been undertaking monitoring for these species to better understand their distribution across the region. This talk will provide some background as to the status of pekapeka and matuku-hūrepo in the Manawatu, improvements in monitoring tools and what we are learning to help protect and improve habitat for these species.

Part of a monthly programme of talks presented by Forest & Bird Manawatū Branch.

Tea and coffee from 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm.

All welcome.
