Central Library is hosting a photographic exhibition by Fiorella Mariel Tomasello until October 11, which ties in with the Latin America & Spain Film Festival 2026.
Here's some information about it from Fiorella:
Born and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I have been living in New Zealand since 2018.
I began photographing concerts in 2010 after realizing that journalistic writing wasn't enough to express myself.
Since then, photography has been a part of my life, alongside a variety of other activities.
I don't like to say I specialize in one specific type of photography because... well, because it isn't true. Within my wide range of photographic
work, images of Tango have come to occupy a significant place in my artwork. My mother has been a tango teacher since I was 15 (and she still dances). From that time until now, I have accompanied her to many "Milongas" and exhibitions. If there is a key element to my photography, it is the art of freezing motion—and what better way to do that than with tango?
Today, I am not only a photographer but also an avid tango listener. It is curious—or perhaps not so much—since we humans often try to do things differently from our parents. BUT there is a very popular phrase in Tango circles: "El Tango siempre te espera" (Tango always waits for you)
And it is absolutely true: over the years, I have learned to love not only tango photography but also the music and the idea of giving it a try at dancing myself.
Anyway, to keep this brief: as I mentioned, I am from Buenos Aires, and just as Te Puke is the Kiwifruit capital of the world, Buenos Aires is the Tango Capital of the World.
