A presentation by Professor Andrew Brown
It seems surprising that so much of the European medieval past – or the imagined medieval past – is present in this country. It appears in artefacts (manuscripts), architecture (Gothic-style churches), and in popular films (The Lord of the Rings). What relevance does this past have in the modern Aotearoa New Zealand? The Middle Ages began to arrive here with nineteenth-century settlers, especially from Britain, and was thus implicated in a process of colonisation. Studying the arrival of medievalism is therefore important; but studying the medieval past itself might also play a part in decolonisation.
Scholars & Soup is a partnership of Palmerston North City Library and Massey University School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication.
