Scholars & Soup: ‘A Level Playing Field? Accounting for Amateurism in New Zealand’

Join us every Wednesday in July at 6pm to hear from staff and graduates of Massey University’s History Programme. Hot soup available from 5.45pm

A presentation by Associate Professor Geoff Watson

Why did amateurism, the epitome of class distinction in Britain, become established in supposedly egalitarian New Zealand? How did it maintain this position, to the extent that New Zealand became in the words of one visitor “the most amateur country in the world"? Did amateurism disappear once sport in New Zealand became professional from the 1990s? In this presentation we examine the remarkable history of amateurism in Aotearoa New Zealand and what it tells us about our society.

Scholars & Soup is a partnership of Palmerston North City Library and Massey University School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication.
