Proud to be...

Each year Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School (PNINS) hosts a massive Multicultural Showcase. A highlight of the year full of cultural dancing, singing, food and performances. A wonderful way to celebrate different cultures by traveling around the world in one afternoon. This showcase is also where the newest The First Voice book is launched!

First Voice is a special project that celebrates the first (home) language of local students. Some PNINS students attend a workshop where they meet community language mentors who help them with their writing process. Language mentors are very valuable, working alongside students and assisting with their writing. The 2025 theme was ‘Proud to be’ which encouraged students to look at some of the reasons they are proud of their culture. This year 41 students took part and there were 24 different languages published in the book. The winning cover was designed by Arthweeyah Amin.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved with the project, the language mentors, teacher/organiser Steph Bunny and the partners alongside the school, Manawatū Multicultural Council and the Palmerston North City Library. Most importantly, congratulations to the PNINS students who contributed to the 27th First Voice book!

You can find physical copies of First Voice through your closest library. Digital copies are available on Manawatū Heritage and Libby
