Pacific Language Weeks

Noa‘ia ‘e mạuri! It’s Rotuma Language Week the first of the twelve NZ Pacific Language Weeks this year. A week of promoting the beautiful island of Rotuma which is found North-west of Fiji. Rotuma is a dependency of Fiji with its own language, culture and traditions. The Rotuman language is indigenous to Rotuma and is a recognized language in Fiji (although not an official language). This week, visit one of the libraries for an information booklet or check out one of the display books at Central.  Source and link for online information and resources is here.

The language weeks are a chance to acknowledge and celebrate our closest neighbours and whānau and the special relationship Aotearoa has with them. The library supports the weeks by sharing resources, displaying books, flying flags at Central (when available) and quite often communities hold events, displays and gatherings at the library.  We're proud to encourage people to learn more about the unique cultures of each of the islands and to practice saying words in their languages.
