Recently the library added a few Nepali language books to the collection with a connection to the city...the author is now based in Palmerston North! We caught up with author Dr. Birendra KC to find out more about what inspires their writing and tips for new poetry writers.

Let’s start with an introduction

I am Dr. Birendra KC, originally from Nepal. Literature has been my passion since childhood. Over the years, I have published three literary books, a collection featuring works by members of the Nepali Sahitya Samaj, where I currently serve as President. In addition, I have authored two books for Nepali children.

Where do you get inspiration for your poems or what are some of the themes of your poems?

I often find inspiration in people who are unable to express their thoughts and feelings themselves. Through my writing, I try to give voice to those unheard perspectives. My poetry is not limited to human experiences; it also reflects the emotions and stories of nature, including birds, rivers, and the environment.

Who are some of your favourite poets?

I admire many poets, but some of my favourites include William Shakespeare and Laxmi Prasad Devkota.

Do you have advice for people who are starting to write poetry?

I would encourage aspiring poets to write about meaningful and impactful topics such as the struggles of underprivileged people, nature, and global issues like climate change. Most importantly, write with honesty and from the heart.

Thank you Dr Birendra KC for sharing these insights with us.

You can find Nepali Language books in the Community Languages Collection.
