We’ve just been made aware of a scam email that purports to be from the City Library. It says there's a $5 charge to "renew your child's library card for the new school year."
The City Library will not email you to ask for money to be paid online.
Other signs that this is not an official City Library email:
- The sender's address is wrong. Library emails such as hold or overdue notices are sent from noreply@kotui.org.nz. (Kotui is the library consortium we're currently part of.)
- Aotearoa's school year starts in February, so 'renew your child's library card for the new school year' is a bit early.
- The library card number is too short. Ours are 14 digits long, and they all start with '26463'
- We check your card details every two years. We do this for free - we do not charge $5 for that.
- They got our name wrong. We are Palmerston North City Library, not Palmerston North Library. As Palmerston North-ians, we can all take pride in that 'city' part!
