The Filipino community make up a huge part of the population in this city and in Aotearoa. With Philippine Independence Day approaching we asked Janella how she maintains her culture in a different country.
Kumusta kababayan!
My name is Janella Nebres Ayban. I am a 16 year old proud Filipina. I was born and raised in Baguio City, Philippines, and moved to New Zealand when I was 10 years old. Adapting to a new country came with challenges of finding where I truly belong. But this taught me the importance of staying connected to my roots. I continue to speak both Tagalog and Ilocano, as my mama Jobelle is from La Union, Bangar and my papa Emmanuel is from mountain province.
I'm passionate in sharing Filipino culture through modeling (MUSA), and dancing. I actively participate in community events by making and selling Filipino food. Music is a big part of my life. I love playing instruments and expressing myself through journaling. I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to represent Philippine Central Association, PCA, in Wellington 2026, Pistang pinoy!
I am inspired by the positive impact of the Palmerston North City Library, which brings people together through learning, culture, and connections. Libraries are more than just places filled with books, they are welcoming spaces where people can discover new ideas, learn about different cultures, and build a stronger sense of community. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire other young people to be proud of who they are, stay connected to their heritage, and embrace their true selves and SHINE!
