What has self-government meant in Aotearoa and why have we wanted it?

Taking a long view, from 1835 to the present, this talk considers the many claims for self-government in Aotearoa including the 1835 He Whakaputanga – Declaration of Independence, the 1852 Constitution, the 1947 ratification of the Statute of Westminster and 2024 call for a Māori Parliament. What has driven these various pursuits of self-government and have we ‘got there’ yet?

Charlotte Macdonald FRSNZ is Professor of History at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka. She is a historian of empires and colonies, with a focus on gender and women.

Part of the monthly series of talks brought to us by Royal Society of New Zealand Manawatū Branch.

Everyone welcome.
