The Lagoons at Awapuni

An ink and watercolour painting of a body of water, with mountains on the horizon. There is a farm and church on one bank, and the other is covered in bush.

Hokowhitu (Centennial) Lagoon is the last remaining “oxbow” lagoon within the Palmerston North  city boundary. U3A New Zealand history coordinator Graham Slater will share some of the stories of a number of other such lagoons in the city, including those at Awapuni. These lagoons, originally created by a shifting river bed, have all since disappeared. However, remnants of all of them are still clear to see once you know what to look for.

Afternoon tea kindly provided by Boho Café after the talk.
