River Justice: Amplifying the voices of the Mekong River Basin

Speakers: Amanda Flaim (Michigan State University, USA), Daniel Ahlquist (Michigan State University, USA) and Warren Warbrick (Rangitāne)

Amanda Flaim and Daniel Ahlquist (Associate Professors at Michigan State University, USA) work together on a long-term, collaborative project focused on river justice along the Mekong River with communities in Thailand and Cambodia. The Mekong River, one of the most biodiverse rivers on Earth, sustains millions of people and ecosystems, but is being damaged by hydropower dams, industrial agriculture, and water grabbing.

The speakers will share how artists, scholars, activists, and Indigenous communities along the Mekong are working together to bring environmental justice to policymakers' attention. Insights from Mekong River justice work will be shared alongside local perspectives from Warren Warbrick (Rangitāne), helping connect global river struggles with river justice in the Manawatū.

In Collaboration with Massey University Political Ecology Research Centre and Royal Society Te Apārangi.

All welcome.
