World Poetry Day: Poems Without Borders: An Evening with Margaret Austin

To celebrate World Poetry Day join us for an evening of poetry with Margaret Austin inspired by her experiences during the 1970’s/80’s in Amsterdam, Athens and above all Paris. Margaret is a woman of courage, resilience and humour. Turning her back on a conventional career path, she deliberately sought experiences in places and situations not for the faint hearted.

BACKGROUND:

Margaret Austin was born in Palmerston North, graduated from Victoria University, and set off on an OE in 1975, with no idea that it would last for 13 years.

Her experiences in Amsterdam, Athens and above all Paris have provided her with a wealth of information and insights.

From erotic dance in Amsterdam to the chorus line of the Folies Bergere (world famous Paris music hall), she went on to become a celebrities interviewer, catching up with actor Anthony Hopkins at the Cannes Film Festival. On return to New Zealand, she became the Duchess of Wellington at the invitation of the Duke, and gained entrance to a surreal and intriguing world.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Publication of her autobiographical work ‘Dancing Naked’ (Random House 1997).
Publication of her first volume of poetry: ‘Frontiers of Exposure’ (2017).
Publication of her second volume of poetry: ‘Nothing Rhymes with Asparagus’ (2018).
