The Hoffman Kiln was built in 1904 and opened in early 1905 (although no official opening date has been confirmed). The ‘continuous’ kiln was built by brickmaker, Robert Price Edwards, and was able to produce 9,000 bricks per day, with the clay coming from the pit nearby. The kiln provides a rare insight into New Zealand’s industrial history. The Hoffman Kiln Trust was formed in 2015 to care for this unique structure and its surrounds.
