About I Nu
Since the day that they met outside a music studio, more than 20 years ago, Marianne & Hnawejë never stopped singing together. One is talented with words, and the other with melodies. Their musical collaboration gave birth to I Nu.
I Nu started in Rouen and its roots are anchored in New Caledonia. Hnawejë inherited traditional folk rhythms from his Kanak culture, but the band likes to explore a wide range of music styles from other countries, too. Like bossa nova, blues and reggae.
I Nu became a trio and a duo again. This did not stop Marianne and Hnawejë from collaborating with other musicians, when playing in a studio or on stage. In the northern hemisphere, they play with Bertrand Lemarchand (accordion), and Christophe Pélissié (slide guitar and banjo). In the Southern hemisphere, they often collaborate with Gustave Wayenece (acoustic bass and chorus) and Ala Hukane (drums, saxophone and chorus). Ala will be accompanying them on this music tour across New Zealand.
“Our music is an invitation to travel, it takes us to other places, not necessarily to one place in particular.”
After a first album released in 2017 which was awarded with two “Flèches de la Musique” (New Caledonian music awards that recognise local artists), the band is now preparing an E.P, to be released in 2019. Their first video, a poetic creation by Chloé Boutin and Fabien Laubry cultivated great success. They are hoping to release a second one soon.
