Manawatu Multicultural Council is hosting a public symposium to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
It will feature an illustrated discourse with several speakers* around the theme “Gandhi, India and the World: The Life-story of a Gentle Colossus”. Relevance of Gandhi’s message in the increasingly troubled contemporary world will be examined with a questions and answers time. Refreshments will be provided.
Guest Speakers are:
*Dr Srikanta Chatterjee: Emeritus professor of economics at Massey University. Originally from India. Has researched and published on various India-related subjects such as Indian history, culture, biography of eminent Indians, including Mahatma Gandhi.
*Dr Vijaya Dharan: Senior lecturer at the Institute of Education, Massey University. Originally from South India, her parents and wider family members had direct contact with the work and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi at that time.
*Dr Supratim Mukherjee: Orthopaedic surgeon in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Palmerston North hospital. Originally from India, interested in the history and culture of India, world history and performing arts and music.
*Dr Regina Scheyvens: Professor of Development Studies at Massey University. Has published a wide range of books and articles on sustainable tourism, empowerment, poverty alleviation and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
