| Welcome Wall

The philosophy behind the wall is reflected in the quote found to the left of all the welcomes.
These words are what people first see when they walk into our Central Library.

E ngÄ waka, e ngÄ reo,
E ngÄ mana, e ngÄ hau e wha
TÄ“nÄ koutou, tÄ“nÄ koutou
tÄ“nÄ koutou katoa
Greetings all peoples,
All languages from the four winds,
Greetings to you all. |

There are 115 welcomes on the wall, with room to add more.

As well as those spoken locally, we have included nonverbal welcomes in Braille and New Zealand Sign Language,
and a few rare greetings in Egyptian and Sumerian (as a recognition of language origin and language loss).
