The Volunteer Programme

The Volunteer Programme invites the community to participate in the life and work of the Library.

The Library is a very busy, exciting environment and people often offer their time and energy - for simple reasons such as 'I want to be involved' or 'it's a way of finding out if I want to be a librarian.'

Home Service
The service for those unable to visit the Library has been quietly assisted by volunteers since the early 1970s. About 30 volunteers deliver to more than 90 housebound people, and to City rest homes.

Volunteers deliver pre-selected books from the Central Library, the branches, or the Mobile Library, to housebound people.

Volunteers also provide a selection service for people who are unable to come to a library.

Genealogy
Towards the end of 1997 the Manawatu Branch of the Society of Genealogists began sharing their expertise with the public on Fridays and Sundays.

Shelf checking
This service started at the beginning of 1998. The time-consuming, constant work is ideal for volunteer involvement and there are currently several shelf checkers, gaining experience and doing a great service for their community.

Ask for a registration of interest form at the Administration Desk,
on the Mezzanine Floor,
of the Central Library.
