Postcards
Picture postcards were popular in New Zealand from the late 1800s.

The New Zealand Post Office first issued plain cards about 1876, and picture postcards from 1897.
Soon after they began to be privately produced.
Growth in the sale of postcards from 1902 onwards was enormous, peaking in 1909 when it is estimated that 7.5 million postcards were sent through the mail.
Postcards with images of Palmerston North were produced locally and by large companies elsewhere.
With the advent of the relatively cheap camera people also produced their own personal postcards for use. Professional photographers offered the same service as well.
The hobby of collecting postcards became very popular and increased sales. Sales and production slowed down after the First World War but postcards have survived, mainly serving tourism.
