The EvilMadScientist website has instructions about building Christmas ornaments with LEDs. HOT TIP: Not sure what an LED is?  Use Google's define feature to get definitions from different websites.     What are some positive consequences of a volcanic eruption? Level: Intermediate/Secondary BBC is a great and reliable website that has good science resources. Their volcano page includes some positive and negative effects of an eruption. Thinkquest also lists some benefits. Even NASA has some great information on volcanoes. And this NZ site has great links to other volcano sites. Other Volcano pages on Many Answers HOT TIP: Not getting the right results from your internet searches?  Try using a thesaurus or dictionary to find other words that mean the same thing - like 'benefits' instead of 'positive conqequences'.

    How can people stop child abuse? Level: Intermediate/Secondary The NZ Families Commission Keeping your family safe website has a section on child abuse with links to questions like What should I do if I suspect child abuse? Where can I get personal advice? How can I tell when a child is being harmed? The Child Youth and Family Service (CYFS) also has resources and information on their website. Jigsaw is a NZ non-profit organisation focused on the wellbeing of all New Zealand children and their families. Whatsup is a site that offers help and advise to young New Zealanders and also has some good links to overseas information about child abuse. KidsHealth has lots of information aimed at children around abuse and neglect.

    What kind of animals live in the seas around Antarctica?  Level 1: Intermediate A food web can help you find this information. HOT TIP: When searching for a phrase, put the words into quotes e.g. "food web" to make your search engine look for these words appearing together. Try Discovering Antarctica - from the British Antarctic Survey and the Royal Geographic Society. Cool Antarctica has a food web (or food chain) looking at whales in Antarctica. The New Zealand Civil Defence website Get ready Get Thru has information about preparing for different sorts of natural disasters in New Zealand - including tsunami.     Can I have a timeline on Ernest Rutherford? LEVEL: Intermediate / Secondary The best place to start is with a Google search. We have an entry on finding biographical entry - click here to open it. To find information on Ernest Rutherford type in "ernest rutherford". HOT TIP: adding double speech marks around his name makes Google search for those words together. The BBC website has a short history of Ernest Rutherford and his achievements. If you are looking for a timeline on the creation of the nuclear bomb, right from when it was discovered through to different atomic tests that took place, ThinkQuest have a great timeline. Did you know that they tested an atomic bomb in a place called Bikini Atoll? This timeline includes all that information - as well as who was involved, and who received a nobel prize!

     What is Fair Trade About? What are Fair Trade's main goals?  When was Fair Trade formed?  Level: Intermediate   The best place to find information about Fair Trade is on the Fair Trade website Click on Find out about Fair Trade on the menu at the top of the page What are fair trades main goals?:   click on Why Fair Trade on the menu on the right hand side of the page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on NEXT until you get the page titled, Vision and Mission scroll down to Our Objectives which is another name for Goals    When was Fair Trade formed? click on Find out about Fair Trade on the menu at the top of the page click on FTAANZ at the top of menu on the right hand side click on History What is Fair Trade About?      50's Fashion     A good site on the history of fashion is Fashion Era .com  .   Click on Fashion History on the menu at the top of the page On the drop-down menu, click on the decade you want information    You can also use a general search engine like Google to find other information about fashion.   To find fashion from particular decades, use these keywords, the decade plus fashion, for example:  "1950s fashion" "1960s fashion" "90s fashion" HOT TIP 1: When searching Google, if you put double speech marks " " around your search term, google will search for it as a phrase. HOT TIP 2: To find information about New Zealand Fashion, click on the "Pages from New Zealand" radio button beneath the search box.

      What are bad fats and good fats and what do these fats contain? Level: Intermediate, Secondary One of our favourite health sites is called KidsHealth. It has 3 sections: for parents, for kids and for teens. They each have a search box which searches across all three sites. HOT TIP: Type fats in the search box which will bring up a list of articles on that topic. The articles will have the letter K, T or P beside them to show that they are suitable for Kids, Teens or Parents. Look through the list for article titled Learning About Fats.  Scroll to the bottom and click on page 2 to see information about types of fats including trans fats.  You can also do a search on Google using these keywords, "good fats" "bad fats" HOT TIP: When searching google, if you put double speech marks " " around your keywords, google will search for it as a phrase. Very handy if you're looking for something in particular and you know the words will be in that order. Look for websites that in the list that have .edu or .gov in the website address.  These are quality sites from educational institutions such as schools and universities and from governments.
