Living Rooms

The six Zones

The Central Library is organised into six Zones:
  • Sound and Vision Zone, Ground Floor
  • Youth Zone, "The Basement,"  Ground Floor
  • Children's Zone, 1st Floor
  • Fiction and Literature Zone, 1st Floor
  • Non Fiction Zone, 1st Floor
  • New Zealand and Pacific Islands Zone, 2nd Floor

Living Rooms

Each Zone is arranged into Living Rooms which group together related material.

Some examples of Living Rooms and Zones include:

  • Food and Drink, Non Fiction Zone
  • Romance, Fiction Zone
  • Soundtracks, Sound and Vision Zone

Many Living Rooms contain magazines and DVDs as well as books.

Within a Living Room, titles are arranged either by Author (Fiction Zone), or by numerical call number (Non Fiction Zone).  Some Zones may have a mixture of both fiction and non fiction titles.

Locating items in the library

When using the catalogue to find an item on the shelves, make sure that you note down this information from the screen:

Location (Is the item at Central Library, or one of the branches)?
Zone (Fiction, Non Fiction, Children's)?
Living Room (e.g. Arts and Crafts)
Author or Call number (e.g. 759.4 MON)

Finally, check the item status - is it IN on the shelves at your library?
