Free internet for library members

The internet and Office software is now free to use with your library card.  This is on the library computers that you have previously had to pay to use.

Here are some answers to questions you may have about these changes:

Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when is free Internet access coming?

Tuesday the 6th of December for the Central Library. The Branch libraries will become free in the following weeks.

Which computers will be free?

All computers that you have previously paid to use at the Central Library and Branch libraries.

Who will it be free for?

  • Free access will be for library members.
  • If you are not a member you may have to pay $2 per hour.
  • If you have excessive fines or lost items on your library card you may have to pay for computer access.

What if I’m not a member, or just passing through Palmerston North?

If you live locally we encourage you to join the library.

For those that don’t we have two options:

  • Free Express Internet computers 15 minutes of access that anyone can use (no printing or Office applications).
  • Paid access – we will continue to sell guest passes (at $2 per hour)
Do I need to do anything?
  • Join the library – your library card will give you computer access
  • Check your membership details – make sure we have the correct phone number and PIN.
  • Speak to a staff member if you have charges on your card.

Won’t free access increase demand for computers?

Yes we predict an increase; this means we will have to introduce systems to ensure fair access.

  • We are instroducing computer reservations – you will be able to reserve a computer if they are all in use.
  • Initial session length: if someone has reserved the computer you are using you will not be able to extend your time. To compensate we will increase the initial sign on period to 60 minutes (currently 30 minutes).

How long can I use a computer each day?

Between 2 to 3 hours depending on the duration of each session.

What is different at the branches libraries?

The branch libraries have fewer computers and are not open as long each day. So the limit on how long you can use a computer will be reduced.
