Ahmed Zaoui - a talk at the City Library

Mr. Ahmed Zaoui will be speaking Friday, April 24 in the World Languages section on the first floor in Palmerston North City Library. The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand sponsors Mr. Zaoui’s presentation. A large crowd is expected to turn up to observe Mr. Zaoui’s presentation.

Mr. Zaoui was educated in Saudi Arabia and Algeria. He is a qualified imam and worked as an associate professor of theology at the University of Algiers. He is a member of the Islamic Salvation Front in Algeria and stood successfully as a candidate for that party, in 1991. The results of those elections were discounted and Mr. Zaoui took flight to Europe, but he was tried and convicted in absentia by the Algerian government and labeled a terrorist for criminal activities by the French government. He subsequently relocated and lived in eleven countries before coming to New Zealand, in December 4, 2002 and requested refugee status. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service objected to his request for New Zealand residency. He was arrested, and initially confined for ten months in a maximum-security prison. These objections were later withdrawn.

He was been granted refugee status and has moved to Palmerston North where he intends to study at Massey University.

Date: Apr 24, 2009

'Paintings from the human archive' - new paintings by Kirsty Porter.

Painted from photographs from her past, Kirsty examines the nature of memory - does she remember the event or does she remember the photograph? A crystalline ooze appears in throughout the paintings, drawing our attention to the potent life force of each scenario.
