What to bring

Types of membership


Joining the Library

  • Membership of Palmerston North City Library is free to all adults living within the City Boundaries, to City ratepayers, and to all children and young adults of high school age.

  • Adults living outside the boundaries can become members by paying an annual subscription or a per-item charge.

  • You will be asked to agree to our Conditions of Membership.

Where to join

  • Join at the Central Library, any branch library or at the Mobile Library.

  • At the Central Library ask at the Membership Desk on the mezzanine floor.

What to bring

Adults need

  • ID with your name and signature (e.g. a driver's licence or passport). 

  • Current proof of address.  This is a document such as a phone bill or bank statement that has been sent to your residential address within the last month.

  • If you have ID but no proof of address then we'll give you a temporary New Member card which is updated when proof of address is produced.

Youth need

  • ID with your name and signature (e.g. student ID or driver’s licence).

  • If you are under 17 then your parent or guardian will need to sign the "Conditions of Membership for Youth" on your behalf.

  • If you have ID but your parent/guardian is not available then we will sign you up as a "New Member".

Children need

  • A parent or legal guardian to produce their own ID and sign the Conditions of Membership on their child's behalf.

  • Children cannot join unless this has been signed.

Types of membership

New members

  • Were unable to show proof of address when they joined.
  • Are limited to a total of three items out on their card at any time.

Country Membership

  • Live outside Palmerston North and do not pay rates to the Palmerston North City Council.
  • Can join for free but pay $2 per item plus any additional charges.  
  • Can renew their books and magazines for no extra charge.
  • Country Member youth and children can borrow for free.

Country Member Subscription

  • Live outside Palmerston North and do not pay rates to the Palmerston North City Council.
  • Can pay a subscription of $120 a year or $60 for six months and borrow most items for free.
  • The subscription covers all adults and children in that household.

  • Borrowers have the same privileges as Adult Members.  This includes paying the standard additional charges for items like DVDs, CDs and Bestsellers. 

Child Membership 

  • Can join the Library at any age.
  • Can reserve up to six items at any time for free.
  • Can borrow most items for free, regardless of whether they live within the city boundaries or not.

Youth Membership 

  • Are in High School.
  • Can reserve up to six items at any time for free.
  • Can borrow most items for free, regardless of whether they live within the city boundaries or not.

Visitors

  • May join the Library as a temporary member if they're going to be in Palmerston North less than three months.
  • Must show ID and sign the Conditions of Membership.
  • Will be limited to three items out on their card at any time.

Organisational Membership

  • Available to companies and organisations that require library services for business purposes.
  • The business must be within the city boundaries.
  • Must provide proof of business identity and signed authorisation from the organisation identifying the card holder.
