Explaining the Register 

Rarangi Taonga, the Register of Historic Places, Historic Areas, Wahi Tapu and Wahi Tapu areas is the national schedule of New Zealand’s treasured heritage places. The Register of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust is a statutory requirement and is defined in section 22 of the Historic Places Act, 1993
  

The Register consists of the following categories:            

Category I:     Places of special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value.  

Category II:    Places of historical or cultural heritage significance or value. 

For further information on the Register and the work of the NZ Historic Places Trust
visit the Trust website: http://www.historic.org.nz/. Full information on local Category I
historic places may be found on this website
