John Wallace Papers

back to the Archives page

John Wallace came to New Zealand from the Unites States with his family, and attended school in Wellington.

He enlisted in WWII and departed with the first echelon of NZ forces to Libya and Egypt. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was sadly reported to be the first NZ officer in the Land Forces to be killed, in 1940.

His connection with Palmerston North is through his sister Julia Wallace, Principal of Palmerston North Girl's High School 1948-1970.

John's records are largely a collection kept by his sister, and contain (some) school records, photographs and records of his war service and death.

Papers of Julia Wallace are also held in the Ian Matheson City Archives
