What is an eBook?

An eBook is an electronic copy of a book. Most of the ebooks we have available look similar to a standard printed book and are in ePub and/or pdf format.

What devices can I use?

eBook readers such as the Kobo and Sony eReaders which are available here in New Zealand and any other eReader which can open ebooks protected with Adobe Digital Editions.

An eReader will generally use a technology called e-ink that gives you a similar experience to reading a paper book.  Almost all of the eReaders that are currently on the market are using black & white e-ink so any images will be in grayscale.

You can also read eBooks on:

  • Windows and Apple based computers, laptops and smartphones
  • Android and Apple tablets and smartphones

View a full list of compatible devices

note: the Kindle eReader is not compatible with borrowing eBooks from libraries in New Zealand.

Do I need a computer?  If so, what software do I need?

eBooks can be read directly on a computer or transferred to a compatible device - see above for full list of devices.  Software for Windows and Apple Macs are available using links on the right of this page.

Your device may also come with software for managing your eBook collections.

If you can browse the Internet on your eReader you will be able to access ePukapuka and download books without using a computer.

What kind of eBooks do you have?

There is a selection of titles available:

  • for adult and children,
  • in fiction and non fiction
  • and both eBooks that you read on a screen and audio books.

How do I borrow eBooks?

You can borrow 5 items at a time from ePukapuka and have 5 reserves at any one time.  Items are lent to you for 14 days.

There is no cost to borrow or reserve items using this service.

How can I get help?

Ask to talk to one of our Creative Digital staff who can help you get started using our ebook service.

We will shortly have some eReader devices for you to have a look at to assist with deciding if you want to purchase one yourself.
