Downloading Music off the Internet
Sound files can be downloaded from a number of different websites. A downloaded song can be played on a computer or digital music player like an iPod or other portable media player. Mp3 is a well known type of format for sound files. AAC is also popular as it is the format that Apple's iTunes stores uses.
Within New Zealand there are a few websites that have licensed songs you can legally download. Prices are usually less than $2 a song or about $18 for an entire album. You will have to ‘join’ one of these sites to gain access. Usually you pay with a credit card although other options may be available.

Free Music sites
Most free music is typically from unsigned artists so the majority of songs may be from unknown musicians. There may also be restrictions on what you can do with the files you download. For example you may not be able to burn the songs to a cd.

There are also sites that are not legal vendors, although they may offer free downloads they bring their own risks. You may expose yourself to hackers or viruses or poor quality or inaccurate file downloads.
Unauthorised distribution and copying of music is a breach of copyright of both international and New Zealand law. In New Zealand custodial sentences have resulted for serious copyright offending.
