Consolidated searching

These consolidated search tools can help you when looking in the online databases we subscribe to - they search across more than one database at once:

Gale PowerSearch - Gale Virtual Reference Library - Ebsco - Proquest - Gale business databases

  • They can save you time - consolidated searching cuts down on the need to repeat your search in individual databases.
  • By searching across multipule databases you will sometimes find articles in a database that you would not have expected to hold anything on your subject.

Note - each individual online database has unique features which are not covered by consolidated searching, so while consolidated searching can produce sufficient results, if you are not happy with the search results it is still worth going into an individual database on your subject to see what additional features you can utilise.

The consolidated search tools we can use are:

Gale PowerSearch  
Consolidate searching of these selected Gale databases:

  • Discovering Collection
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library
  • General OneFile
  • Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
  • Student Resource Center

You can search all of these at once, or select the ones you want to multi-search.

Gale Virtual Reference Library 
This does a consolidated search of just the reference e-books that are included in the Gale Resource Center databases:

  • Biography Resource Center
  • History Resource Center
  • Health & Wellness Resource Center
  • Literature Resource Center
  • Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
  • Student Resource Center

You can search across all of the e-books, search within a particular one, or read an entire e-book cover to cover.

Ebsco
You can search these databases together:

  • Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre
  • MasterFile Premier 

Go into either database, then either click on the “Choose Databases” tab, or choose “Multiple Databases” from the drop down ‘in’ menu, then tick both database titles and click Continue.

Proquest
You can search these databases together:

  • Australia & New Zealand Newsstand
  • Science Journals

Go into either database, click on the “Databases selected” link, then tick both database titles and click Continue.

Gale business databases
You can search all these databases together:

  • Business & Industry
  • Business & Management Practices
  • TableBase 

Go into one of these databases, then on the “In database” line (under the ‘Words in Title’ search box) tick the databases you want to search.
Or click on the ‘Home’ button on the page next to the B&I button, and tick the database names.

Consolidated searching is also known as Federated searching, multi-searching, metasearching, integrated searching, cross-database or cross-index searching.
