About this eResource

This popular encyclopedia is now available for Library members to use online.

Fully searchable and browsable collection of authoritative references, including:

  • Britannica's latest article database, hundreds of articles added throughout the year,
  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate pop-up Dictionary and Thesaurus,
  • the Britannica Book of the Year in Review,
  • and over 100,000 student friendly links to other World Wide Web sites selected by Britannica editors.

The online version has more than 126,000 articles with hundreds of articles added or updated throughout the year.

It also has daily features, updates and links to news articles from The New Zealand Herald and the Children's BBC News.

Britannica Online is one of the most comprehensive, authoritative information databases on the Internet.

It contains four editions:

  • Britannica Library Edition lets you search all the versions at once to see results for students of every level
  • Encyclopaedia Britannica for adults
  • Britannica Student for secondary/middle school students and up
  • Britannica Junior for primary school students and up.  

Britannica Online features include:

  • Over 27,000 illustrations, maps, flags and graphics.

  • Over 3,500 video and audio clips covering topics ranging from rainforests to the Holocaust.
  • Bibliographical citations pointing users to additional information sources. 

  • An interactive World Atlas allows students to discover with ease detailed information on the nations of the world. For history, geography, government or the economy, this unique atlas provides the answers.

  • Students quickly understand new vocabulary with Merriam-Webster's "Quick Click" dictionary. It also serves as the perfect tool to help students with lower reading levels use the encyclopedia effectively.
