2014 marks the 100th year anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. To commemorate this historical event, we are extremely honoured to present the book launch in Ashhurst for Professor Glyn Harper’s latest book “Jim’s Letters”, beautifully illustrated by Jenny Cooper. Glyn is the Professor of War Studies at Massey University and is currently the Massey Project Manager of the Centenary History of New Zealand and the First World War.
“Jim’s Letters” portrays the relationship between two brothers, a soldier and his younger brother in New Zealand and the letters they send to each other. It captures the affection and love that exists between the brothers who are on different sides of the world. As the war progresses, Gallipoli is on the horizon. It contrasts beautifully the lives of a family at home and the life of a soldier separated from his loved ones entwined in the brutality of war. This is a poignant and touching book that will elicit strong emotions, while at the same time bringing home the sacrifices and contributions that our New Zealand soldiers made in “the war to end all wars”.
Ashhurst School are playing a huge role in this launch. Their classes will be showing displays commemorating World War 1 and some pupils will be reading the book on the night.
This book launch occurs on Friday the 11th of April. From 5pm, Ashhurst School – 96 Cambridge Avenue – will be open for people to view the classroom displays the children have done. From 6pm we will be moving to The Village Valley Centre – 21 Guilford Street – for the official book launch and book signing.
Refreshments will be provided and “Jim’s Letters” will retail for $25.00.
You will all be most welcome. If you have any queries, please contact Ross Meads – firstname.lastname@example.org or call (06) 326 8646
