About Archives
What are archives?
Archives are the records that are made or received and accumulated during the life of an organisation or person. They are preserved because of their continuing evidential or informational value, and are generally unique and irreplaceable.
Who uses the archives?
All those who are interested in local history and the development of Palmerston North and its environs, such as local historians, academic and student researchers and genealogists, or for one-off local interest enquiries.
Where do our archives come from?
As well as receiving archives from the Palmerston North City Council, we encourage the local community to consider donating the records of businesses, organisations or families.

About our name
|
Ian Matheson was Palmerston North City Council's
first archivist (1986-2002).
It is due to Ian that we have such a first class facility and
collection of Council and Community records. The City
Archives was renamed in his honour after his death in 2002.
