Easy self service is here! You’ll notice new self service terminals in all our libraries. These things can check up to six books out at a time – great if you’re in a hurry. There are also a couple of machines at our central library that can manage payments for items as well.
“Since the beginning of June we’ve been working hard to install new technology and systems to improve self service, and materials handling. The new technology is much faster, more innovative, and the efficiency gains are impressive” says Linda Moore, Manager Living Room of the City. “Our staff are looking forward to spending a lot more time with our customers to help with digital skills and tips for devices, creating content, accessing electronic resources, and providing learning programmes and research and reference services. We’re excited about that”.
“We’ve just installed a new returns and sorting system, which will reduce materials handling time substantially. The net result is that resources will be back on the shelves, and available for borrowing much faster. Members’ accounts are updated immediately and automatically when borrowed items are returned, and this will reduce any handling errors substantially. And, there’s the added bonus of not having to wait in a line at the counter to unlock DVDs and pay fees”.
People will need their library card, or access to their card number to use easy self service. Our ‘Love your Library Card’ campaign’ is aimed at encouraging everyone to bring their card with them when they come to the library so they can use the new system. If you have lost your card, please ask for a replacement. We’re offering these free of charge at the moment. People with smart phones can take a photograph of the card number or download an app to store the card details.
What happens if you don’t have your card details with you when you want to issue something? No problem. You can still have your items issued the old way for now. If all of this sounds a bit daunting please feel free to ask for help. We’ll be on hand to help you understand how to use the easy self service system. One-on-one, and group tutorials can also be arranged. Just phone to book an appointment. And we can give you details on some of the apps we tried for storing card details. EASY SELF SERVICE – EASY!
